Thistle Hill has been growing grapes organically for more than thirty years.
But what does organic mean?
In a sentence, it means that no harmful chemicals are used in the vineyard, that is, no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, artificial fertilisers or synthetic fertilisers are used at all.
So the grapes are left to grow naturally, without harmful sprays, and when it is time to pick the grapes, the flavours are more intense than grapes grown traditionally, just like an organic tomato tastes better than one purchased in a supermarket. And from these flavoursome grapes, we produce wines that are intense, full-bodied and delicious.
Organic Winemaking
As winemaking is a fairly natural process, organic wines are made in a similar way to conventional wines minus a few inorganic additives. The main difference is organic wines contain much lower levels of preservatives than non organic wines, and the winemaking process is modified to allow for this without impacting on the quality of the wine.
So why not come to our cellar door and taste wines made from organically grown grapes for yourselves. You will notice the difference! It makes sense that without any harmful chemicals being used on the grapes, the end product is better for you… naturally. And no chemicals means no headaches!
