Nature knows best. That’s why, when it comes to making great wine, the less interference, the better. Here at Thistle Hill, this philosophy informs every single thing we do – from planting and nurturing our vines to barrelling and bottling our wines. The result is consistently outstanding organic drops, enjoyed all over Australia and the world.
We’re one of Mudgee’s oldest wineries. It was in 1976 that we established our vineyards on our beautiful property in the Erudgere Valley, just a ten minute drive from town. Even back then – before organic was a trendy word – we decided to go chemical-free. 17 years later, we were awarded organic certification by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA).
Thistle Hill expanded in 2009, when current owners Rob and Mary Loughan took over from founder Lesley Robertson. They decided to join forces with neighbouring Erugdere Vineyards, combining two properties into one.
The land is rich, not only in scenic beauty, but in history, too. When you drop by, you can visit Australia’s first waystation: in the 1800s, gold miners used to stop here overnight, to relax and refresh themselves. If you’d like to do the same, then you’re welcome to stay in our cosy guesthouse.
The simple answer is that organic grapes make superior wines. Grown without any pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers, our fruit is healthy, succulent and bursting with deliciousness. This vibrancy is expressed in our wines, which are known for their exuberance, elegance and fruit-driven flavour profiles.
In addition, organic is better for your health and that of the environment. We feel lucky to live in such a stunning area, so we’re passionate about keeping our land, waterways and air in pristine condition. We want to leave them in good working order for the generations to come.
Our boutique, organic wines have been championed by the likes of wine writers James Halliday and Robin Bradley.
We focus on premium quality, small batch wines. Our winemaker, Tim White, treats every harvest with utmost care and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring he gets the most out of our fruit. Among our collection are Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet, all grown right here in our organic vineyard.
